music

i'm somewhat active in the world of music that gets called experimental or avant-garde. i'm not terribly happy with these terms, but i use them because i can't think of anything better. in practice, it overlaps a lot with the world of underground rock music. i play guitar and bass clarinet, mainly.

lie and swell ::
somewhere between jazz and punk rock. one guy said we sound like "[john coltrane's] interstellar space with king crimson riffs". i think that means he liked us. my most active band.

oncideres ::
guitar-oriented "solo project". one of my friends heard the music and said it made her feel like she was in texas. it's the best compliment i've ever gotten.

slaughter/smith ::
a duo with nat slaughter (contrabass). very sparse music. i use a lot more electronics and extended technique. some of my most rewarding experiences as a musician have been playing with nat.

various ::
it's sometimes fun to perform with people you've never played with before. you never really know what's going to happen, which makes it especially gratifying when it's good. it's like magic -- music out of nothing. at least when it's good. when it's bad it's just bad.
